Protecting the Foundation of Your Smile

Healthy gums are essential for keeping your teeth in place. Gum disease starts as simple gingivitis (bleeding, red, swollen gums), but if left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis. This is a deep chronic bacterial infection that destroys the bone and tissues supporting your teeth, leading to loose teeth, receding gums, bad breath, and eventually tooth loss.

At Zen Smiles Dental, we approach periodontal disease with customized therapies. Rather than just cleaning the surface, we perform **deep scaling and root planing (SRP)** under local anesthesia to remove bacterial plaque and calculus from deep below the gum line. We also utilize soft-tissue lasers to decontaminate infected gum pockets, sterilizing the area to facilitate gum reattachment and heal your gums naturally.

Clinical Journey

The Treatment Procedure

We systematically eliminate underlying bacterial colonies to stimulate tissue healing and halt bone damage.

01

Periodontal Charting

We measure the space between your gums and teeth (pocket depths) with a specialized probe to identify active infection zones.

02

Root Planing (Deep Clean)

Under local numbing, we clean deep below the gum line and smooth the tooth root surfaces to prevent plaque from sticking easily.

03

Laser Decontamination

We apply a delicate laser tip inside the pockets to sterilize the bacteria and vaporize diseased tissues, encouraging rapid gum reattachment.

04

Maintenance & Review

We re-evaluate the pocket depths after 4 to 6 weeks and schedule periodontal maintenance checkups every 3 to 4 months to prevent relapse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about gum disease management.

What are the signs of gum disease?
Early signs include gums that bleed when brushing or flossing, red or swollen gums, and persistent bad breath. Advanced signs (periodontitis) include receding gums (teeth look longer), gum tenderness, pus between teeth, and loose teeth.
Is gum disease reversible?
Gingivitis (the early stage) is fully reversible with professional cleaning and good home hygiene. However, once it progresses to periodontitis, the lost bone support cannot grow back. We can, however, halt the infection and manage the disease to prevent further bone loss and save your teeth.
Does deep cleaning (scaling & root planing) hurt?
Because root planing requires cleaning deep under the gums, we apply a local anesthetic to completely numb the area beforehand. You will not feel any pain during the procedure. You may feel minor gum soreness or cold sensitivity for a few days after, which is normal as the gums heal and tighten around the teeth.
How does dental laser help in gum treatment?
The laser light targets and eliminates only the pigmented anaerobic bacteria responsible for gum disease, leaving healthy tissues untouched. It sterilizes the deep pockets, stops bleeding immediately, and stimulates the body's natural healing response to reattach the gum tissue to the tooth root.
